Aquarium Filters

What filter do I need for my aquarium?

Beginners Guide to Keeping Tropical Fish There are several types of aquarium filter available.

The main aquarium types are cannister filter, power filter, external filter and undergravel filter

Aquarium filters work in a combination of 3 ways; Mechanical Filtration, Chemical Filtration, and Biological Filtration.

Cannister filters are filled with a floss like material which is changed regularly. Cannister filters on work mechanically,by trapping particles. They don't work biologically so our view is unsuitable for a community tank, but OK for a temporary hospital or breeding tank.

Undergravel filters work both mechanically and biologically, by drawing all the dirty water through the gravel at the bottom of the tank. They can look unsightly and are not currently in favour.

We recommend a power filter as they use all 3 types of filtration and work in harmony with the nitrogen cycle.

External filters are also good if you have a very large tank but can be a little noisy.
