Tropical Fish Species
Which tropical fish species should a beginner choose?
If you're new to keeping fish, we'd recommend you go for types of fish which are rereasonably easy to keep, will live together in harmony, are interesting, and also include a few which will readily breed.
Before choosing your fish, remember the important rule about stocking levels, and also the rate you add the fish.
In standard shaped aquarium, less than 6 months old, stick to a maximum of 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. Once the tank is matured beyond 6 months, then this can be (very gradually) increased to 2 inches per gallon.
The other really important rule to avoid new tank syndrome, is to add fish very gradually :- none for the first month, then a couple of hardy fish until the nirogen cycle is complete, then a maximum of 6 fish every 3 weeks.
Here's the list of fish we'd recommend for beginners in a community tank:-
Black Widow Tetra
